As a result of the\u00a0COVID-19 pandemic, many countries and regions have imposed quarantines, entry bans, or other restrictions for citizens of or recent travelers to the most affected areas.\u00a0Other countries and regions have imposed global restrictions that apply to all foreign countries and territories, or prevent their own citizens from travelling overseas.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Together with a decreased willingness to travel, the restrictions have had a\u00a0negative economic\u00a0and\u00a0social impact\u00a0on the travel sector in those regions. The\u00a0European Union\u00a0rejected the idea of suspending the\u00a0Schengen free travel zone\u00a0and introducing border controls with Italy,\u00a0a decision which has been criticised by some European politicians.\u00a0After some EU member states announced complete closure of their national borders to foreign nationals, the\u00a0European Commission\u00a0President\u00a0Ursula von der Leyen\u00a0said that “Certain controls may be justified, but general travel bans are not seen as being the most effective by the World Health Organization.”\u00a0A few days later the EU closed its external borders.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A study in Science found that travel restrictions had only modest effects, delaying the initial spread of COVID-19, unless combined with infection prevention and control measures to considerably reduce transmissions. Researchers came to the conclusion that “travel restrictions are most useful in the early and late phase of an epidemic” and “restrictions of travel from Wuhan unfortunately came too late.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
